Spinal manipulation (also known as chiropractic adjustments) have been used for thousands of years by various professions to decrease pain and increase range of motion. These techniques have been used by Doctors of Chiropractic (DC), Doctors of Physical Therapy (DPT), and Doctors of Osteopathy (DO) for conditions such as low back pain, neck pain, headaches, and much more. Some specialized chiropractors can even employ these adjustive techniques in other areas, like the arms, legs, hands, and feet.
Some people may be afraid of spinal manipulations / adjustments because of the “popping” noise that is often heard or felt, or because it sometimes involves a rapid movement of the neck. Long time research into the safety of spinal manipulation shows no evidence of significant injury or side effects. Most people don’t experience symptoms at all, but some people will experience only mild muscle soreness or discomfort. This is sometimes experienced as a natural part of reducing stiffness, and most people have less pain and better range of motion afterwards, especially when paired with focused soft tissue work, rehabilitative exercise, and learning safer movement patterns.

Initial Visit —If this will be your first visit to Durango Spine & Sport, we will first start with a comprehensive evaluation to determine the cause of your problem or concern. The doctor will take a thorough health history and ask you important details regarding the reason for your visit; this is a good time for you to tell your doctor what is most important to you. Then, based on your goals and information gathered, a physical examination will help to identify the best course of action to get you feeling better quickly. Most musculoskeletal cases don’t require any other tests or X-rays, but in the event these are required, such arrangements will be made.
We will then discuss the appropriate treatment plan with you, which will typically consist of chiropractic adjustments, soft tissue therapy, therapeutic exercise, and movement strategies to prevent future injury. There are other services available in our integrated clinic, should other modalities like laser therapy, infrared sauna, cryotherapy, nutrition therapy and others be deemed necessary to best serve you. You should plan to spend about 60 minutes at your initial visit.
Follow up / Routine Visit – Because most musculoskeletal complaints require more than a single visit to make lasting progress, we offer follow-up visits that typically last 20 minutes. In these visits we will perform chiropractic adjustments and other indicated therapies, but because we don’t have to collect your information on these follow-up appointments, they are much shorter than the initial visit. While there is significant variation in terms of how long or how frequent you should be under our care, most patients with musculoskeletal complaints are successfully treated and discharged from our clinic with about 6-12 visits over the course of 6 - 12 weeks. We are not interested in selling you long care plans that require a large upfront investment. For the majority of cases, if you aren’t feeling much better after a few visits (often much sooner), we simply aren’t doing our job!
Re-Evaluation – These visits are an important part of your journey to feeling better, because they give us an objective measure of how you are progressing and whether or not our treatment approach needs to be modified in any way. While the timing of these re-evaluations vary, we typically like to perform them every 4 - 6 weeks, just to ensure we are still on the right track and making good progress. You can plan to spend about 30 - 45 minutes at these appointments.
